In Greek mythology, the Hydra is a multi-headed serpent infamously known to be guarding the entrance to the Underworld. But in Harabas’ case, it’s the cycling underworld where the fixed gear riders, single-speeders, and unracers lurk.
Like the multi-headed monster, the Harabas is designed to have multi-potentiality with features such as track ends, removable brake bosses, 700x45c tire clearance, internal cable routing for the rear brake, complete with rack and fender mounts. One can set it up as either a fixed gear bike or a single-speeder, and everything in between.
I have been testing the prototype for a while now paired with the Harabas fork, with varying fixed-gear setups. The first time I got hold of the bike it had 32c tires, 48x15 ratio, and 110mm stem with dirt drops. It had been previously ridden from Manila to La Union by the designer, Kiko Escora. It was fast, agile due to a geometry similar to a track bike’s, and hella comfortable with the 32c Clement Strada tires.
As cyclocross races kicked off locally this year, I changed the setup anew. 700x40c knobby tires, 44x20 gear ratio, +7° 100mm stem with low-rise handlebars, and a 25mm setback seatpost to move my center of gravity back a little for more controlled descents and more comfortable off-the-saddle pedalling.
Bringing this setup off-road, I began to notice a number of things. The angles are a bit too harsh for more technical trails. With HTA and STA both at 74°, this can be offset by putting a setback seatpost and a short stem. You can also get a different fork with longer axle-to-crown length, but this will raise the bottom bracket.
Bottom bracket drop will be higher on the production frames at 58mm, compared to the prototype’s 54mm. This lowers the center of gravity a teeny bit, but more importantly it won’t raise the bottom bracket too much if you run fatter tires.
Overall, the Harabas is the perfect all-rounder with almost limitless setup possibilities. Either you race it on fixed-gear events, ride it long distance, or have fun in the dirt, this is the perfect bike for you.
