12th of June is the Araw ng Kalayaan (Independence Day) for the Philippines, a day that is celebrated for the Philippines' freedom. For some Filipino cyclists, Independence Day is observed for Independence Day bike rides. Most of these rides would be long-haul bike rides outside the city.
Last June 12, six riders of WeFXD, a fixed-gear group from Manila, were visiting Japan that week. It was the first time WeFXD went outside the Philippines as a group. Despite being in a foreign land, these Filipinos didn't make an excuse not to observe their country's independence day. WeFXD went from Namba, Osaka to Kyoto Prefecture and back to Osaka for their Araw ng Kalayaan ride. Riding to Kyoto from Osaka would be a 60-kilometer ride, with a total of 120-kilometers including the ride back.
The road to Kyoto shows bikes and pedestrian friendly roads. Kyoto, popularly known as the old Japan and the former capital, showcases historically priceless structures such as temples, shrines, and castles. The highlight of the ride was the visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, a forest full of soaring stalks of bamboo. The bamboo grove is a popular tourist spot that is great for photographs and to experience nature.
