Forty competitors from all-over the Philippine's have gone head-to-head on what is considered to be one of the biggest and fastest organized fixed-gear racing in the country to this day. Racers from in and around NCR have come to watch and participate in a Speedway Fixed Criterium held at the Clark International Speedway last January 31.
This was the first-ever fixed-gear criterium organized in the Clark International Speedway (CIS). Although it's a 2.5-hour drive away from the city, the event has still attracted over 300 in attendance; drawing people from Batangas, Cavite, Metro Manila, Bulacan and of course people from the Pampanga fixed-gear scene.
The race format for the criterium was 1 lap neutral, and 30 minutes plus 2 laps, covering a total of 24 kilometers. Racers managed to keep an average of 37km/h, considering the race track has technical turns and major inclines.
Here are the results of the race:
1. Uno Cruz (North Side Fixed)
2. Sok Palisok (Crest Pursuit x Progress)
3. Kalki Saulo (WeFXD)
4. Mark Austria (CVTFG/Velodoom)
5. Nico Oliveros (North Side Fixed)
The Speedway Fixed Crit has been made possible through Streamline Sports and Tuason Racing, in coordination with Goldpsrint Manila and Manila Fixed Gear.
Notable: Howard Bagaporo came in 8th place, being the oldest competitor at 57 years old. Coming from San Fernando, Pampanga, Howard was able to keep-up with the peloton, composed of men between ages 20-30. Howard had no experience in racing a fixed gear nor a professional cycling competition. Look forward to see him in the next races.
